Prior to dredging the Winnwood ponds, the aquatic wildlife must be removed and relocated. In addition to approving the desilting and dredging project on June 28, Council also approved a $64,600 contract with Halff Associates to remove the wildlife in the ponds in accordance with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department guidelines.
The removal will occur in phases at the beginning of each pond dewatering process. Fish recovery and relocation activities will be conducted via electrofishing and/or seining. Turtle recovery and relocation activities will be conducted via dip netting and/or seining. Collected fish and turtles will be placed within an oxygenated holding tank and transported to the relocation site. Mussels will be removed upon completion of dewatering. They will be relocated to coolers in order to maintain their temperature and quickly moved to the relocation site.
The relocation areas will be determined as part of the Aquatic Resource Relocation Plan and will vary depending on availability, conditions within the receiving pond or stream, and weather. This contract, which is funded through Addison’s Storm Water Capital Projects fund, does not include any fish, turtle, or muscle stocking upon completion of the project.
