The Town of Addison announced today the kick off of a new False Alarm Reduction program aimed at reducing the number of false alarm calls. The Addison Police Department receives an average of 2,100 alarm calls a year and false alarms account for approximately 95% of those calls. These false alarms divert law enforcement resources from crimes in progress, other emergency situations, and time spent patrolling assigned areas.
Addison residents and businesses are now required to register their alarm systems at AddisonAlarmRegistration.com.
Alarm registration began December 8, 2017 and all alarms will have to be registered by January 1, 2018. There is no cost for residents to register an alarm system, but a $50 annual fee for businesses. Both businesses and residents will receive three free false alarm calls. There will be a $100 fee for the first false alarm if you do not register your system. That fee will be waived if the system is registered within 30 days.
The revised alarm ordinance, which was approved by the City Council this summer, also requires businesses and residents to pay fines for every false alarm call after the three free ones included with registration. A series of graduated fines starting at $50 and reaching up to $100 per violation will be assessed for repeated false alarms.
1-3 false alarms: Free
4-5 false alarms: $50 per occurrence
6-7 false alarms: $75 per occurrence
8+ false alarms: $100 per occurrence
Earlier this year, the Addison Police Department contracted with CryWolf, a Maryland-based alarm monitoring service developed by AOT Public Safety Corporation, to administer the False Alarm Reduction Program. A percentage of the money generated by fines will be used to fund the contract.
The Addison Police Department spends more than 900 hours per year responding to false alarm calls. Most false alarm calls are generated by businesses and the result of user error, installation/service errors, and/or equipment failure.
